Since the days of waiting for an analog Internet connection, listening to that lovely telephone line sing and buzz as it connected to a local area network, I have been hooked on technology.
In my lifetime, I have seen some amazing achievements in technology. That’s not to dismiss the incredible developments of the 20th Century Industrial Revolution, but in this article I want to focus on the current evolution of high technology and how it has shaped my career.
Every aspect of our lives is connected to the cloud within a hyper‐accelerated technology boom known as The Internet of Things or IoT.
The Internet in particular has placed the entire world at our fingertips. We are connecting sensors to everything and developing applications so devices can communicate with each other. We are smart‐enabling manufacturing processes, aviation and infrastructure, adding sensors to personal devices such as garage doors, lighting systems and coffee makers, and of course, self‐driving autonomous vehicles.
Stepping into my Comfort Zone
Ottawa is known as a technology innovation hub so it is no surprise that it is at the centre of these exciting developments. One of those is an innovative annual conference called IoT613. IoT613 is a grassroots organization that brings in keynote speakers and technical workshop hosts from around the world to foster innovation and connect the IoT community.
I had the pleasure of supporting the group at their first conference in 2015, which was held at the super awesome and ever evolving Makerspace North. In 2016, we moved to a new venue, the Canadian Museum of Nature, where I joined the committee as Marketing Lead and was able to bring the power of my creative marketing and design agency, Accurate Creative in as a Gold Sponsor. We provided support with variety of marketing materials, graphic design, video production and digital marketing campaigns.
Accurate Creative’s Role
Together with our Creative Director Doug Jackson, we also held a workshop on Branding for Technology. Never before has a clear branding strategy been more crucial than in this increasingly wired, and complex, economy. Our workshop focused on creating trust, a conversation, how to claim brand territory and ultimately how to be unique in a crowded market. Participants worked in groups to create a product and pitched their company name, products and taglines to the whole audience with some very clever and entertaining results.
As a creative agency providing clients of all shapes and sizes with marketing and creative services, Accurate Creative has a unique lens on the evolving business trends and technology evolution that we—and our clients—have faced and will face. As a company we have been on a constant learning and upgrading curve since our inception in 1988.
As an agency that began primarily as graphic and print design shop, we’ve been following, growing with, and shaping marketing and communications trends all along. We have embraced and evolved with the digital landscape to become the company we are today, focusing on web development, motion graphics and animation, digital marketing and campaigns, and brand management. We understand the role and impact that technology has on our lives and businesses. Working with and supporting the local IoT community and sharing our experiences at IoT613 was a unique opportunity to inspire our team.
All this to say, we live and work in amazing times. IoT613 has some big plans in 2017 that will be announced very soon, so stay tuned.
